nimittani cha pasyami viparitani keshava। na cha sreyo ’nupasyami hatva sva-janam ahave॥ 1.31 ॥ |
My mind is reeling & I am now unable able to stand here any longer. I see the omens also inauspicious; only causes of misfortune, O Krishna, killer of the Keshi demon. I do not see any good in killing my own kith & kin in the battle. Krsna, I covet not victory nor kingdom nor pleasures & happiness.
na kankse vijayam krishna na cha rajyam sukhani cha। kim no rajyena govinda kim bhogair jivitena va॥ 1.32 ॥ yesham arthe kanksitam no rajyam bhogah: sukhani cha। ta ime ’vasthita yuddhe pranams tyaktva dhanani cha॥ 1.33 ॥ acharyah: pitarah: putras tathaiva cha pitamahah:। matulah: svasurah: pautrah: syalah: sambandhinas tatha॥ 1.34 ॥ |
O Govinda, of what use will kingdom, or luxuries, or even life itself be to us? Those for whose sake we covet the throne, luxuries & pleasures,- all those teachers, fathers, sons, grandfathers, maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law and other relatives,- are here arrayed on this battlefield staking their lives & riches. Krsna, I do not want to kill them, though they may kill me.
etan na hantum icchami ghnato ’pi madhusudana। api trailokya-rajyasya hetoh: kim nu mahi-krte॥ 1.35 ॥ |
O Lord, I am not ready to fight with them even for the sovereignty of the three worlds; how , then for this earth. Krsna, what joy can we derive through slaying the sons of Dhritarashtra?
nihatya dhartarastran nah: ka pritih: syaj janardana। papam evasrayed asman hatvaitan atatayinah:॥ 1.36 ॥ |
Sin alone will accrue to us as the result of killing these desperadoes. Therefore, Krsna, it does not behove us to kill our relations & the sons of Dhritarashtra. For how shall we be happy after killing our own kinsmen?
