tri-vidham narakasyedam dvaram nasanam atmanah। kamah krodhas tatha lobhas tasmad etat trayam tyajet॥ 16.21 ॥

Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, There are three gates leading to this hell—lust, anger and greed. Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul.

etair vimuktah kaunteya tamo-dvarais tribhir narah। acharaty atmanah sreyas tato yati param gatim॥ 16.22 ॥

Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, The man who has escaped these three gates of hell, performs acts conducive to self-realization and thus gradually attains the supreme destination.

yah shastra-vidhim utsrjya vartate kama-karatah। na sa siddhim avapnoti na sukham na param gatim॥ 16.23 ॥

Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, He who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination.
