| tri-vidham narakasyedam
dvaram nasanam atmanah। kamah krodhas tatha lobhas tasmad etat trayam tyajet॥ 16.21 ॥ |
Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, There are three gates leading to this hell—lust, anger and greed. Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul.

tamo-dvarais tribhir narah। acharaty atmanah sreyas tato yati param gatim॥ 16.22 ॥ |
Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, The man who has escaped these three gates of hell, performs acts conducive to self-realization and thus gradually attains the supreme destination.

vartate kama-karatah। na sa siddhim avapnoti na sukham na param gatim॥ 16.23 ॥ |
Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, He who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination.
